DANCE HOUSE (Sicily/Catalonia/Poland)

Movement of Dance-Houses was born in the twentieth century in Hungary. It was initiated by composers and ethnographers, such as Zoltán Kodály and Bela Bartók, and spontaneously developed among urban youth interested in Hungarian folk music from Transylvania and Moldavia. In a short time, this movement has become an alternative to the communist cultural unification and the original model of practical education through music and dance. In Poland, the birth of the movement are associated with young people’s revival of interest in living Polish folk tradition observed since the early 1990s.

The Szczecin Dance-House was inaugurated at the end of 2013, inspired by the idea that traditional culture, while remaining lively, open and intriguing, can reinforce a sense of identity, at the same time prompt the participants to explore new paths.

Within the frames of the Bonds of Culture Festival we would like to invite you to take part in the unique multicultural meeting with an interesting dance traditions from Catalonia, Sicily and Poland. Three days of workshops, conducted by three independent groups of musicians and dancers from different parts of Europe, will end up in the joint finale. The entire event will be cared of by Jacek Hałas, a musician, scholar and researcher of traditional culture from different parts of Europe.

LassatilAbballari & Tavola Tonda – Sicily

Polkas, mazurkas, waltzes, and Scottisch were imported to the island by people returning from the mainland, and here they acquired the character and the typical rhythm of the island, differing from continental sisters. These couple dances allowed physical contact between dancers and were, in the popular imagination, related to a less poor life than the country life; for this reason they have almost completely supplanted the traditional Sicilian tarantella in the circle (which is part of the great family of tarantella throughout southern Italy). However, there are still places where the tarantella dance is danced and appreciated (as in Calabria and in the city of Messina in Sicily). Characteristic for Sicily is also a very social Sicilian cuntradanza (European derivative contredances). The proposed list of dances taught during the workshop: Introduction to the Sicilian tarantella, Sciatamarra Caltavuturo, Scotish in Bompietro circle, Scottish in Geraci circle, Polka Musetta of Troiny, Cuntradanza Cumannata. Workshops led by Barbara Crescimanno.
