The Choir of the Witches

(Poznań, the musical performance)

The concert of over twenty singing women and instrumentalists; the members of the choir play the instruments constructed especially for them. One of the inspirations for the establishment of the choir has been the fact that 500 years ago (in 1511), the village of Chwaliszewo near Poznan (now a district of Poznan) was the scene of the execution of a woman accused of witchcraft by burning her at a stake – the first such case in Poland, soon followed by the wave of witch-hunting all over the country. Women singing in the choir are of all ages, representing many generations and performing various professions, yet sharing the passion and the desire to speak up. As far as their content is concerned, the lyrics of their songs are full of energy, reflection and self-irony – they tell about daily struggles with their own lives, their own bodies, expectations of society, their own ambitions, self-oppression and violence. One of the songs became the hymn of the Black Protests in Poland.
